It's a Beautiful Day to Live in Bayview

August 19th, Idriss Stelley Foundation (ISF) and Kenneth Harding Jr. Foundation teamed up with community orgs POOR Magazine and Peoples Community Medics for a day of solidarity in Bayview/Hunter's Point.

Early in the day, Kenneth Harding Jr. Foundation held their monthly and largest community feed yet--providing lunch to more than 150 people. Denika Chatman, Kenny's mother, holds "Community Feeds" at the corner of 3rd and Oakdale in Bayview where she and allies give out bagged lunches to San Franciscans in need to raise awareness about the police murder of Kenneth Harding for allegedly evading a $2 bus fare. Decolonize Oakland and Labor Black and Brown assisted the foundation with resources and helped make sandwiches. This event not only aims to educate the public about what happened to Kenny but additionally it brings attention to the economic plight that many people of color face in the resource-rich Bay Area.

Afterward, Idriss Stelley Foundation held our annual Birthday Cookout to celebrate what would have been Stelley's 35th Birthday. Idriss Stelley was murdered by SFPD at the Sony Metreon Theater June 12, 2001 at only 23-years-old. Stelley's mother, Mesha Monge-Irizarry, an activist before her son's killing, has become one of the leading figures in the police accountability movement, founding ISF not long after police gunned down her only child. ISF provides direct services for victims and survivors of law enforcement brutality in the Bay Area and beyond, and for families and friends of loved ones killed by cops.

Attendees were treated to an always free workshop from Peoples Community Medics Co-founders Sharena Curley and Leslie Phillips! Curley and Phillips teach basic first aid and CPR to poor neighborhoods so that they are not solely dependent on police and ambulance workers to treat critically injured residents.

Poor Magazine Co-Founder and prolific poet, Lisa "Tiny" Gray-Garcia performed for the crowd.
