SF OccuPride
Queer activists dropped banners at Pink Saturday in the Castro and marched under the OccuPride banner in the San Francisco LGBT Pride parade on Sunday.
Activists with OccuPride, the new San Francisco ACT UP, QUIT, and others dropped banners from the roof above Walgreen's at 18th and Castro Saturday evening, in the midst of Pink Saturday festivities on June 23, 2012.
On Sunday, June 24, the OccuPride coalition broke into the Pride parade as the first contingent after the "Dykes on Bikes." The group carried banners including "Community Not Commodity" and a burning police car commemorating the White Night riots in May 1979. They called for action on AIDS and demanded justice for trans women CeCe McDonald (imprisoned in Minnesota for allegedly killing her attacker in self-defense) and Brandy Martell (recently murdered in Oakland). The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence chose OccuPride for one of its "Absolutely Fabulous Marching Contingent" awards.
After marching most of the route, the group doubled back and joined other contingents. One group made up of members of HAVOQ, Pride at Work, and others, estimated at approximately 50 people, jumped into the march in front of Kaiser Permanente's float, demanding that the large insurer fully cover transgender healthcare.
Another group of similar size broke into the march -- with some jumping the barricades that line the route -- in front of Wells Fargo's float, calling attention to the bank's role in foreclosures and evictions. Another contingent later in the parade demanded justice for alleged Wikileaks whistle-blower Bradley Manning.
