NEW OWNER?

It was reported by a staff member at the San Francisco public employees' pension board (which owns a piece of Hotel Frank by virtue of its investment in AEW Capital Management) that AEW has a "letter of intent" from a buyer for the hotel, and that escrow should close in July. If this is true, will the new owner have more sense than AEW or its managers from Provenance? As the chant goes, "A-E-W, We've Had Enough of You!" Stay tuned, everybody...

"ABOUT THOSE PROTESTERS..."

Meanwhile, The Hotel Frank bosses recently posted a notice on their website in a lame attempt to make light of our picket line. Here's what they say, with a little editorial comment from us:

"ABOUT THOSE PROTESTERS… San Francisco is famous for free speech and a few of our fellow citizens [actually, fellow workers] regularly exercise their rights on the street outside our doors. [There is only one door, folks....] Sometimes it's just two or three people, sometimes up to 10 [or more, sometimes a lot more]. They are noisy most of the time. [Please, we are noisy ALL of the time.] Chances are, you'll be out and about exploring our beautiful city or attending a meeting when they are here in the afternoon. [In other words, stay away from the hotel in the afternoon.] When they visit in the morning, perhaps you'll already be up getting ready for the day. [At 7am? Fat chance.] Whether they make an appearance or not [we will], we are confident you'll enjoy one of the city's best locations and plenty of comfort and style at Hotel Frank. [Meaning, once Hotel Frank has gotten their hands in your pockets, you are on your own, suckers.]

NO HEALTH CARE JULY 1. STRIKE COMING?

Hotel Frank finally started paying for health care in April. So far they paid for April, May and June, but have made no committment to pay for July or beyond. That means Hotel Frank workers will lose their health care in about a week. Last time this happened, at the end of March, the Union planned a strike for April 1 (no April Fools jokes, please), but the hotel bosses relented and started paying up. Will history repeat itself? Will there be a strike in July? Again, stay tuned...

JULY 3 MARCH

One thing that is coming for sure is a July 3 March for Small Hotel workers, focusing on Hotel Frank, strike or no strike. Get your walking shoes and noisemakers ready. Here's the dope:

Hotel Frank was auctioned off in a foreclosure sale in May, 2010 by WELLS FARGO.
The bank then sold the hotel to a financial speculator called AEW CAPITAL MANAGEMENT.
The hotel is now managed by a company called PROVENANCE.
(But ask again tomorrow...)

Since the foreclosure sale:

• Management refuses to recognize the Union contract that existed for nearly 40 years.
• The hotel did not pay one penny for medical coverage or pensions for almost two years.
• We all have to work an extra half-hour per day for free.
• Room cleaners clean many more rooms, even if it means skipping breaks and meal periods.
• Staffing has been cut at the front desk and in housekeeping, while the workload has increased.
• A federal judge has found the hotel guilty of firing and disciplining workers for Union activities
