Parent, Teacher & Student Sit-In at Lakeview Elementary to Save Oakland Schools, 6/15/12: photos
On June 15th, the last day of classes for this school year, parents, teachers, students, and allies commenced a sit-in at Lakeview Elementary school on Grand Avenue to protest the closure of five Oakland schools, including Lakeview. The other four neighborhood schools set to close are Santa Fe, Maxwell Park, Lazear, and Marshall Elementary, all flatland schools serving predominantly black and brown children. To kick off the indefinite sit-in, a barbeque was held, followed by a press conference. The photos below reflect the scene at dusk later in the evening.

Numerous protesters camped on school grounds overnight. Oakland school advocates plan to continue their protest against the Oakland Unified School District's plans until several demands are met, including encouraging the district to refuse to pay the state of California for debt incurred while the OUSD was under state control from 2003-2009. These debt payments total $6 million a year, while the school closures will save only $2 million. Not paying the debt would allow the primary demand of the action to be met, keeping all five schools open.
On June 16th, a rally is scheduled for 2pm at Lakeview. Organizers further intend to operate a free, all-volunteer summer school at Lakeview.
