War Memorial Horseshoe Drive to be Named in Honor of
George and Charlotte Shultz
Dedication Ceremony: Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.
SAN FRANCISCO, April 23, 2012 - The San Francisco War Memorial Board of Trustees will officially dedicate and name the horseshoe drive between the Opera House and Veterans Building in honor of U.S. Marine Veteran and Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and his wife Chief of Protocol Charlotte M. Shultz at a publication dedication ceremony on May 10, 2012, at 5:30 p.m.
The War Memorial Board of Trustees approved the naming of the horseshoe drive in honor of the Shultzes in its acceptance of a generous grant of $1.5 million from the Stephen Bechtel Fund for the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project, which was made in honor of the couple. The Stephen Bechtel Fund grant supports the design and construction of the San Francisco Veterans Memorial which is being designed by artist Susan Narduli and landscape architect Andrea Cochran. Scheduled to be unveiled on Veterans Day, November 11, 2013, the new memorial will fulfill the original architectural vision for the San Francisco War Memorial Complex and an 80-year promise to honor the service of all veterans.
"Our Veterans have fought to preserve our freedom and security. The San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project honors this essential service to our country," said former Secretary Shultz in response to the grant announcement. "Charlotte and I are proud to be associated with this magnificent project and we are deeply grateful to the Stephen Bechtel Fund for their generous support."
About the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project
The San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project is headed by former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and former Secretary of Defense William J. Perry, who co-chair the Veterans Memorial Steering Committee, which is raising private funds for the design, installation and maintenance of the Veterans Memorial. The original 1920's plans for the War Memorial Complex called for a veterans' memorial in the Memorial Court, the landscaped area between the War Memorial Opera House and Veterans Building.
Following the Project "kick-off" in April 2010, the San Francisco Arts Commission was engaged to conduct a nationwide search for artist design teams. Over 120 artists responded to the "Call to Artists," and in November 2010, three finalist design teams were selected to prepare design proposals. Final design team proposals were submitted in June 2011, and following public display, the War Memorial Board of Trustees endorsed the selection of the design by artist Susan Narduli and landscape architect Andrea Cochran. The Narduli/Cochran design, entitled Passage of Remembrance is a breathtaking series of three reflection pools circumscribed by an octagon of basalt stone.
Final design plans for the San Francisco Veterans Memorial are now in progress. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2013, with dedication of the San Francisco Veterans Memorial targeted for Veterans Day, November 11, 2013.
