Students, Workers, and Community United for Justice
Day of Action for Workers Worldwide

An assembly of UC Santa Cruz students, workers and community members have planned a day of action in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street's call for a worldwide general strike and the historical significance of May 1st, International Workers Day.

This day of events will include rallies, poetry, performance, art, and education around the struggle of the 99% and our collective potential for social transformation. The action will begin with a kick-off rally at the Quarry Plaza on UCSC campus at 11:30 AM which will culminate in a late afternoon march to the downtown post office. Community members will join the march at the post office where there will be a rally with rousing musical performances, a May Day pole, and several local speakers on workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, and June ballot initiatives.

Millions of people throughout the world –workers, students, immigrants and migrants, the unemployed and underemployed – will take to the streets on this day to unify our diverse struggles. Historically, May Day has been a day of recognizing the struggles of workers. In a time of tuition increases while student debt topples 1 trillion dollars , millions of families suffering from an illegal foreclosure process, deportation for non-violent crimes in the tri-county area averages 46% while California at 20%, and unemployment in California at 11%, this is our opportunity to come together in solidarity and demand a system that provides a sustainable living for the working class This year’s May Day event is not only to call attention to these austerity measures we continue to face, but also to create an ongoing network of solidarity between Santa Cruz students, workers, and community members.
