Dual Immersion Gone Wrong

by Nicole Bettencourt
As Doyle Park Elementary School closes in Santa Rosa and a French-American charter school stands in line to take its place, the public should question the effects.
I am very concerned about the closure of Doyle Park Elementary and the acceptance of the French-American charter school in Santa Rosa. Although I find it upsetting that the school was closed in the first place, this is not the focus of my writing. While dual immersion programs can be beneficial and charter schools can also be beneficial, the largest issue is that the new charter school will be French. With a large amount of Spanish speakers in California, a Spanish and English dual immersion program is what would be most relevant. I think that we need to perfect dual immersion programs with Spanish, which will be helpful to the majority of people, before we replicate the design with other languages.

If we are going to deny Spanish dominant ESL learners at some schools in the area the right to receive a quality education due to poor programs or lack of programs, who are we to create an entire school that will cater mostly to English dominant students or students from out of the area? I think this plan has disregarded the wellbeing of its neighbors and most of all is just plain unnecessary.
