2012 Equinox and All Things Being Equal

by Kate DeVries
Equinox may exert a balancing force on
open space development in California.
According to a report by Scientific American,
the Equinox occurred early this year.
On the West Coast on it occurred at 10:14 PM,
March 19 placing it the next morning,
on the East Coast, at 1:14AM, March 20.

According to the Encarta World English
Dictionary, Equinox is “when the length
of day and night are approximately
equal everywhere on Earth.” For years
we have seen this day posted on our
calendars as March 21.

Coincidentally, this equalizing force is
playing itself out in other ways in
Southern California. Two legal cases
are poised to exert a balancing force on
the development of open space in the
Southern San Joaquin Valley.

The Tejon Ranch Corporation development,
called Tejon Mountain Village, is facing
its opponents in Fresno this week. A tribe,
an environmental group, and a coalition
of neighbors are hoping this earthly event
will level the playing field for them.

The Kawaiisu Tribe of Tejon filed their
Third Amended Complaint March 19 in
Eastern District Court, Fresno and the
Center for Biological Diversity has an
appeals hearing on March 21st in Fresno,
in the California Court of Appeal for the
Fifth District.

Has the earth wobbled a bit this year
to balance the people’s right to have
a fair and equal process in land development
in this state? Tomorrow we may find out!
