Support the Uprising Against Privatization in Wukan, China

by Steven Argue

The villagers of Wukan, China are rising up against privatization and have taken control of their town. Watch the attached video. The struggle in Wukan helps confirm my Trotskyist position that the fight in China for the defense of what is left of socialist property relations is, in part, a struggle against the brutal Stalinist bureaucracy. In addition, that struggle must remain independent of U.S., European, and Japanese imperialism whose goal is simply capitalist counter-revolution. The struggle in Wukan runs counter to what the imperialists are fighting for.

The 1949 Chinese Revolution brought many advances for the working class and peasantry of China including the doubling of life expectancy during Mao’s rule, huge advances in literacy and women’s rights, an end to imperialist control of the country, a socialist economy and the overthrow of capitalism, and an end to chattel and feudal slavery in the most backwards regions like Tibet*. What is left of those gains must be defended.

What the revolution lacked, however, was workers democracy. It was led by a Stalinist Party (that didn’t believe in workers democracy) in charge of a peasant army under a military command structure. That command structure became the new government after Mao’s army took power. The Trotskyists who believed in socialism with workers democracy were rounded-up and jailed when Mao came to power along with their friends and families. Trotskyists continue to defend what is left of the socialist economy from imperialist attack and internal counter-revolution, while at the same time calling for a political revolution that overthrows the brutal Stalinist bureaucracy, defends socialist property relations, and implements a system of workers democracy. That is why we supported the Tiananmen Square uprising in the 1980s and support the Wukan uprising today.
