Occupy Education Rally at UCSC and March Downtown

by Alex Darocy (alex [at] alexdarocy.com)
On November 9, students at the University of California Santa Cruz organized an 'Occupy Education' event which called for demonstrations to be held in support of the statewide day of action. At noon a rally was held at Quarry Plaza, which was followed by a march from UCSC to the Town Clock in downtown Santa Cruz, and then a demonstration at Wells Fargo Bank.

Approximately 600-700 students and community members participated in the demonstration. When marchers arrived at the base of the UCSC campus, they occupied the intersection of Bay and High Street for an hour. Similarly, when the group reached Mission Street, several intersections were also briefly occupied. When the group arrived downtown, the intersection of Water Street and Pacific Avenue was occupied for approximately 15 minutes until demonstrators moved to the Post Office, where speeches were made by community members. Wells Fargo was the next stop on the march, and while there, demonstrators wrapped 'crime scene' tape around the bank building. The demonstration at Wells Fargo continued for an hour, at which point community members moved on to visit the courthouse steps occupation location of Occupy Santa Cruz while that group was holding its general assembly for the day. Over all, approximately 30-40 officers with the SCPD, the county sheriff's department, and the CHP were present at various points during the demonstration, and after people left the Wells Fargo location, police carrying riot gear were spotted walking up and down Pacific Avenue, where in addition, police vehicles were parked on every block.
