Thursday, POOR Magazine/Prensa POBRE and others in solidarity with Occupied Oakland marched to decolonize this already occupied Ohlone land... POOR Magazine Marches to Decolonize Occupy Movement
Thursday activists answered POOR magazine’s call out for a rally to decolonize the occupy movement by focusing on the entities oppressing communities of color and the poor here in the bay area. Protesters marched from the Occupy Oakland encampment to the police station downtown, then headed to the Housing Authority and the Dept. of Social Services (Welfare), finally culminating in a protest outside of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in San Francisco. Demonstrators sought to draw attention to how marginalized communities already feel occupied by the state. Co-organizers/co-sponsors included International Indian Treaty Council, Idriss Stelley Foundation, Education Not Incarceration, Homeless Action Center, Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP) San Francisco Bay View, SF Living Wage Coalition, POOR Magazine, Peoples of color Caucus at Occupy Oakland and United Playaz, Dignidad Rebelde
Chanting "This is Ohlone Land! Already Occupied!" Other chants included "Decolonize! not Gentrify!" and "Decolonize! Not Occupy!"
I always forget my good camera when they throw down... but watch this low-resolution snippet of an amazing spoken word poem dedicated to the warrior mothers that make our movements possible.
