MoveOn Sponsors March on Banks, Rallies with OSC

by Alex Darocy (alex [at] alexdarocy.com)
Community members responding to an event organized by MoveOn.org, held a rally and march which departed from the Santa Cruz Town Clock midday Friday, October 14. On the way to Chase Bank, marchers rallied with those present at the county courthouse occupation location of Occupy Santa Cruz, and occupiers joined the march on banks, which also included visits to Bank of America and Wells Fargo, and ended with a rally in support of a "local" bank, Lighthouse Bank.

Approximately 75-100 community members attended the march. Many participated with the intention of closing their bank accounts, but all three of the major banks locked their doors as soon as they became aware that the protesters were arriving. A set of march 'rules' was announced at the rally at the town clock, and the march route was tightly pre-planned by event organizers; marchers hoped to make their way through the downtown along Pacific Avenue, but they were diverted down Front Street. Also, the list of banks visited was pre-planned, and not publicly explained was the reason for Lighthouse Bank being chosen as the local bank to visit.

Marchers' loudly chanted in unison along the route, and chants included those in support of Occupy Santa Cruz, and several supporting local banks.
