Sunday May 22nd Noon to 2pm the "Coalition Standing Up for the Right to Sit" held our first very creative "chair-a-pillar" at Berkeley BART. More than 30 people participated in this Spirited action involving chairs and sitting on the curb and sidewalk on Shattuck Avenue. The City of Berkeley, led by local merchants/property owners is considering following in the footsteps of SF and passing a reactionary anti-sitting ordinance this summer. A coalition made up of homeless service providers and homeless people is involved in organizing to fight the ordinance. This is the second progressive action organized in the last month to educate the community about the proposed ordinance and to influence City Council members to oppose the ordinance when it comes up. For more information about this action call: 510-282-0396.

Calls opposing an anti-sitting ordinance in Berkeley are needed to Linda Maio: 510-981-1710 and to Darryl Moore: 981-1720, two City Council members who have still not decided what position they will take on an anti-sitting ordinance. Messages can be left on their voice mail!
