As the nuclear crisis in Japan intensifies, it becomes more clear that nuclear energy is not safe or clean. Japan's nuclear disaster demonstrates that there remains a huge gulf between what needs to be done to stop further environmental destruction and the solutions offered by political and business leaders.

Ecology and Socialism argues that time still remains to save humanity and the planet, but only by building social movements for environmental justice that can demand qualitative changes in our economy, workplaces, and infrastructure.

About the author: Chris Williams is a longtime environmental activist, based in New York City. He is professor of physics and chemistry at Pace University and chair of the science department at Packer Collegiate Institute. Williams is also a frequent contributor to the International Socialist Review.
