The U.S. State Department has expressed its concern that medical supplies as well as food stocks may be threatened and had directed USAID to inventory of all U.S. food aid resources in the region and ordered the agency to prepare to dispatch food supplies to the region should the need arise.

The State Department is also engaging with Egypt and Tunisia on the management of workers who have fled the violence in Libya.

"USAID and our State Department's Bureau for Population, Migration and Refugees continue to work closely with the International Organization for Migration and the UN High Commission for Refugees in order to support their efforts to manage the outflow of workers and refugees," the statement said.

The Department also urged Libyans "to tend to the needs of their fellow citizens."
