Professor Stephen Zunes on Nonviolent Revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt 2-3-11
On Thursday Feb. 3rd 2011 Professor Stephen Zunes talked about how the successful unarmed resistance in Tunisia and the ongoing struggle in Egypt has not only once again demonstrated the power of strategic nonviolent action, but is bringing long-overdue democratic change to the Arab world. These popular uprisings have enormous ramifications for US-backed dictatorships and other autocratic regimes, US policy in the Middle East, and the future of the entire region. Stephen Zunes, politics professor and of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco and a leading authority on Middle Eastern and North African politics, nonviolent action, and U.S. foreign policy, shared his thoughts on these dramatic developments and lead the discussion. . . . but neither the Tunisian nor Egyptian revolutions have been non-violent. Tunisians are still attacking police and national guard buildings. While many protesters have been non-violent, there are others who understandably responded to the attacks of the security forces by fighting back. And, it's a good thing they did, or they would have otherwise been suppressed.

As if the RCNV EVER had any complaints about Egypt's military dictatorship, poverty, or lack of civil rights. ZUNES and the RCNV have a fetish about Israel and devote nearly all of their energy vilifying Israel and the United States. Now, with this overwhelming victory by first the Tunisian people and now by the Egyptian people in a largely bloodless revolution, ZUNES and the RCNV see they've missed the boat and are trying to pretend they were on board all the time.
They weren't.
As if the RCNV EVER had any complaints about Egypt's military dictatorship, poverty, or lack of civil rights. ZUNES and the RCNV have a fetish about Israel and devote nearly all of their energy vilifying Israel and the United States.
