Update: Midnight Matt in court for defending himself while tree-sitting

by ..served cold
Muwekma Park tree-sitter - Midnight Matt - was in court yesterday, Feb. 2nd, for defending himself from an attack while tree-sitting.
Only in the California Injustice system, where killer cops spend the least possible amount of time in prison and activists are charged with the most absurd crimes, do we find a tree-sitter in jail for self-defense. Midnight Matt was in court yesterday, Feb 2nd, for defending himself from an attack while tree-sitting in People's(aka Muwekma) Park.

Having been originally charged with attempted murder by UCPD(glorified security guards with weapons) , Matt's charges were reduced to assault with a deadly weapon, and the even more ridiculous laser pointer charge was completely dropped. The judge and court system have been mentally trying to break Matt, yesterday they kept him in the courtroom all afternoon until 5 pm, which lead to his contingent of supporters, originally 20 people, to dwindle down to 12 when his case was finally heard. The judge treated Matt similar on the day of his arraignment.

Midnight Matt's next court date is Feb. 17th at 9 am - Wiley Manuel Courthouse Dept. 115, 660 Washington St. Downtown Oakland. If possible please come down and support Matt as he goes through what is clearly another in a long line of bogus charges against activists. His bail is currently $100,000, if you would like to make a donation to help bail him out of prison please contact Zachary Running Wolf 510-878-8427. Thank you!

The Muwekma Park tree-sit lasted a total of 90 days. The tree-sitters feel that this direct action helped to temporarily save the park from the greedy UC Board of Regents and their plans for redevelopment. More direct action will be needed in the future to make sure that People's Park remains a resource for the poor and homeless population of the East Bay.
