FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 1, 2010

ROOT DIVISION PRESENTS: Second Saturday January 2011
Call & Response

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 8th, 7-10 pm

In music, call and response refers to two successive and distinct phrases usually played by different musicians, a conversation-like exchange of musical statements, one being the call, and the other the response. The paintings in this exhibition were created through a visual call & response between artists chosen by local artist Robert Minervini.

The exhibition features the work of 10 painters from around the country. Participants were asked to step outside their usual studio practice and engage with another artist. The paintings featured were created during a four-month period of conversation and experimentation. Each pair of artists set their own guidelines for their collaboration based on location, previous histories, and artistic background. This exhibition is the culmination of those collaborations.

It is the hope of the curator that this exhibition will create a platform for discussion about the role of autonomy, community, influence, and the self in the arts, as well as shed light on the creative process.

ABOUT ROOT DIVISION:
Root Division is an arts & arts education non-profit located in the Mission District of San Francisco. Root Division's mission is to improve appreciation and access to the visual arts by connecting personal inspiration and community participation. We provide subsidized studio space to working artists in exchange for their service in creating shared learning opportunities for the community. Artists develop creatively and professionally by teaching art to under served youth, leading adult education classes, and producing exhibitions that showcase local emerging artwork. By combining multiple opportunities for creative exchange, Root Division cultivates an artistic ecosystem that enriches life throughout the Bay Area.

Root Division is supported in part by grants from Grants for the Arts: San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund & Voluntary Arts Contribution Fund, Walter & Elise Haas Fund, and Bill Graham Foundation. The Second Saturday Exhibition Series is sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission through a Cultural Equity Grant/Organizational Project Grant, the Hewlett Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
