Prop 23 Crushed!
Organizers of the Crush Prop 23 campaign said at 10pm today: "We are confident we crushed prop 23!"
At 10pm PST John Armstrong of the Crush Prop 23 campaign announced: "Our resounding defeat of proposition 23 sets a powerful precedent and serves as a model for the rest of the country to follow in moving toward a clean energy future."
The Crush Prop 23 Campaign office in Palo Alto made over 4,000 direct voter contacts in one final push today, reaching out to voters across the state. This was a part of Credo Action's statewide effort that made over 110,000 contacts, both by phone and in person.
Throughout the two month campaign, volunteers at various community events such as farmers markets reached out to voters to tell them that Texas oil companies were behind this deceptive proposition. Other organizations including the Sierra Club, Environment America and Union of Concerned Scientists made their own contacts and reached out to voters. Campaign media strategist Ruth Robertson said, "these organizations' coordinated grassroots efforts made this victory possible."
Rallies on street corners in front of Valero gas stations and on university campuses contributed to raising awareness of the environmental impact that the passage of the ill-fated proposition would have on the state of California.
At the office in Palo Alto, where for the last 8 weeks campaigners have gathered for phone banks and strategy sessions, volunteers raised cups of champagne to celebrate the landmark climate victory this evening.
