Tree Sit Now Underway in Muwekma (People's) Park in Berkeley - Call Out for Support: video & photos

by dave id
In the evening on October 31st, Halloween night, advocates for People's Park climbed into the trees to take a stand against the ongoing destruction of the park by UC Berkeley, with the encouragement of the Telegraph Business Association, and to protest the dwindling resources available to the city's homeless population. The tree sitters have renamed the park "muwekma" for the Ohlone word for "people" -- the Ohlone being the original peoples indigenous to this area. They are calling for supporters to come out and participate or otherwise assist their effort to defend the park.

The tree sitter describes how George Beier, one of the candidates for Berkeley's District 7 in the upcoming November 2nd election, has stated that he wants to see a museum and soccer field replace the park. The university has already been slowly mutilating the trees and vegetation in the park. [video 1:24]
