Demonstrators Demand Social Security Stay Off the Chopping Block
Protests at First Two Stops for "Fiscal Solutions Tour"
Last week the Concord Coalition and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation launched their “Fiscal Solutions Tour,” a series of public forums focusing on right wing cures for the nation’s economic problems. One of their major proposals is lowering the benefits and raising the retirement age for Social Security. In San Francisco and San Jose, they were met by protesters who shouted "Hands off Social Security!"
Demonstrators rallied outside the tour's first stop, the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. Senior advocate and labor leader Hene Kelly addressed a crowd that included members of the Older Women's League and the Gray Panthers. The next day in San Jose, members of the California Alliance for Retired Americans led a protest at an entrance to the San Jose Convention Center, then leafletted inside the Center where the forum was being held. At both locations protesters spoke with members of the press and said that Social Security is America's promise to its people and should not be changed.
