'Speaking To Las Vegas in the Language of Las Vegas'
VISUAL ART EXHIBIT BY Laurenn McCubbin

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – July 3 - 31, 2010 – Femina Potens is tickled pink to introduce you to the multi-dimensional world of Sex Workers. This July we bring you a stunning multimedia art installation that combines a performance, video and illustrated portraits of real Las Vegas Sex Workers by artist, Laurenn McCubbin. We are pleased to present her amazing, graphically-explicit one-woman show all month long! Considering the current flaccid economic climate, McCubbin illuminates the underground yet highly visible economic exchange that is Las Vegas sex work. The artist questions the relationship between the economy of Sin City and the illegal activities that give it its infamous status. McCubbin seizes the perfect moment to expose the backhanded and contradictory legalities of sex work through recreating "hooker cards," in her own graphically bold visual style. The artist uses her personal history as a sex worker to affirm her message in a uniquely proactive and sex-positive manner.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Femina Potens event if we didn't get your blood flowing! We invite you to the Opening Reception at 7pm, including a sizzling Artist Performance at 9pm on the evening of Saturday, July 3rd, 2010. Enjoy refreshments and libations during the opening reception as we tell the stories of these sex-positive individuals and their work. Come introduce yourself to a pioneer in the underground world of sex work. Join us all month long as we present you with an array of exciting workshops, performances and events. Show runs through July 31, 2010.

July 25, (Sunday), Sex Positive Sex Workshop with Carol Queen 6pm In a culture that's so divided about sex work of any kind (It's fascinating and kind of glamorous! It's debased and degraded!), sex workers have the most real knowledge about our own lives. But many of us carry some of society's obsessions to work with us. We often get self-esteem by comparing ourselves to other sex workers (I'm a dancer, not a whore! Well, at least I don't fuck them! Those street girls are all druggies!) -- and it can be hard to stay sex-positive when sex is, well, work. Join Carol Queen, author of Real Live Nude Girl: Chronicles of Sex-Positive Culture, to explore what makes a sex-positive sex worker -- and why you really want to be one if you're going to be a sex worker at all. This session is appropriate for people of all genders who've worked or are thinking about working. ($10) Reserve your spot now.
