San Francisco | LGBTI / Queer7th Annual Trans March in San Francisco
A spirited march on a cold San Francisco summer night illustrated that the struggle for full equality for the Transgender Community is growing in strength and numbers BY MICHELLE SCHUDEL On Friday, June 25, 2010 about a thousand people met at Dolores Park at 6pm in support of the Transgender, Transsexual community and their struggles. The rally focused on a united community fighting for their safety and equality, especially with Nancy Pelosi’s ENDA proposal that deliberately leaves out the Transgender, Transsexual community. Following the rally, at 7pm, people gathered at the mouth of Dolores Park marching through the Castro, down Market Street to the Civic Center for a closing rally. The march was a vivacious militant march led by the Transgender, Transsexual communities, chanting, “Trans people united will never by defeated,” “Trans rights now” and “Nancy Pelosi can’t you see; we want ENDA with a T.” At its height the participants had swelled to several thousand. Among the groups that participated were the dynamic TransLatina’s, T-lish, Native American Trans Talking Circle, the ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. It was a very successful march and rally! This year's march marked San Francisco's seventh year since the event began in 2004 when it was first established to honor Gwen Araujo, a young transgendered woman who was brutally murdered in Newark, California in November of 2002. Due to the solidarity of the community supporting Trans community, they will be leading the pride parade on Sunday, June 27. Join the parade on Sunday to say: LGBT, we demand equality.

I love the pictures but am bitterly amused to see how answer and the party for socialism and liberation are all up in it. fucking opportunists, only started giving a hot damn about lgbtq folks when it became clear that the anti-prop 8 movement was big and a god place to recruit people who don't know how problematic answer, et al, is.

Actually Mary, if you knew about the history of ANSWER you'd know that it's a front group for the Worker's World Party and that the main spokesmodel for those Stalinist creeps for the last 20-25 years has been Leslie Feinberg (Stone Butch Blues, Transgender Warriors), so naturally they are for trans rights. The PLS is a split from the WWP.
Yes they are opportunists, yes they are creeps, yes they are assholes, but their attachment to trans politics is older than you think. Just to be historically clear, not to apologize for their creepiness and opportunism. |
