First Annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco

by ~Bradley (bradley [at] riseup.net)
The first annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup was held on the weekend of June 19th and 20th at Terra in San Francisco. The two-day event featured a presentation by internationally renowned, best-selling author Jorge Cervantes. It was his first U.S. appearance, and he went without his signature cap, shades and dreads.

In his presentation, Cervantes focused on growing cannabis outdoors and organically. He used Switzerland as a case in point, showing photographs of healthy plants freely growing in fields in the most conservative region of the country. "You can really grow some good medicine in greenhouses and outdoors," said Cervantes. He also stressed that, "You can grow outdoor in many climates. You don't think of Switzerland as a place for growing outdoors, but as you can see it works, and it works well."

Pictured above: Ken Estes holding colas of Grand Daddy Purple, the marijuana strain he founded. Ken has been fighting to change laws regarding medical marijuana since 1990. When paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, he was given many pills that made him sick and he was unable to eat or sleep. While in therapy, he was introduced to marijuana which saved his life. Marijuana lifted his spirit and allowed him to eat and sleep which enabled Ken to have a great recovery. For a short film and video about Ken, and one patient's struggle to survive during the so called War on Drugs, watch Leave Ken Alone.

The first annual High Times Medical Cannabis Cup also featured a two-day expo, cultivation seminars, an activism session with leaders of the medical marijuana movement and much more.

Medical-marijuana pioneer Irvin Rosenfeld has been receiving pot, just enough to meet his need of 30 joints a day, from the federal government since 1982.

Rosenfeld, Elvy Musikka, George McMahon and Barbara Douglass are the four remaining patients in the Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program, which started in 1976 with glaucoma sufferer Robert Randall receiving the first-ever medical-marijuana prescription. The marijuana is grown at the University of Mississippi and processed in North Carolina.

Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided a medical cannabis dispensary in San Francisco on March 25, 2009, just days after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder signaled that the Obama administration would not target patients and providers in the 13 [now 14] states with medical marijuana laws.

During the late afternoon raid, DEA agents entered Emmalyn's California Cannabis Clinic, located in the South of Market neighborhood at 1597 Howard Street, where they removed bins of marijuana plants, growing equipment, cash, and computers. The dispensary was open for business at the time, and witnesses said some disabled patrons had to be helped to the floor.

Mr. Baumgartner re-opened Emmalyn's two days later, on March 27, 2009, but he and the dispensary still struggle to recover from the raid.

I am happy to see Ken Estes finally find a City he can do business in.Richmond is it!
The Days of The Wild Wild West of Oaksterdam were interesting.Ken was growing his following then. The PEERS across the Street looked down yet showed up for product.

WE had a Line out the door in no time at 1727 Telegraph.
I built The Bunker for Ken because the Security in Oakland SUCKED.
I made runs from Humboldt.
Working for Ken was Risky yet an ADRENALINE RUSH.
The Brick House in Berkeley robbed.
The Bad Rap that "Devil in a wheelchair" and "When Pot Clubs go Bad" was hard to shake.
I left in 2003 when he went to the Cannabis Cup in A-Dam.
I was EMBROILED in Scandal by His Fiscal Sponsors who were afraid of me and my quest that Ken be 501C3.Ken would have done just that if he could have figured a way to get a Federal Tax ID Number. You see when we obtained the PERMITS in 2002 he was very honest with the city. That caused ISSUES.
The Other Clubs Lied Ken DID NOT!
GO FIGURE!!
It was Chris Thompson and the Articles.
PEACE
I know I accompanied him and was his Contractor.

Yes Ken may have been lacking in EMPLOYER SKILLS.
I would not change a thing except for the FISCAL SPONSORS.
