Activists for Bank Accountability Converge on Wells Fargo
San Francisco Kickoff to Nationwide Rallies Against Wall Street
Hundreds of demonstrators demanding that big banks and Wall Street bear the burden of causing the financial crisis gathered in Justin Herman Plaza with umbrellas and banners at noon on April 27, then marched to the site of Wells Fargo's annual shareholders meeting in the financial district. Their loud protest was reportedly heard on the 15th floor where the shareholders gathered.
Speakers on the street included people who had lost homes to the financial crisis, tenant rights activists who demanded that renters by allowed to remain in foreclosed homes, and union leaders who said that large banks like Wells Fargo have a responsibility to rebuild the economy in a way that creates jobs.
Members of A New Way Forward locked arms with allies in Causa Justa and Youth United for Community Action behind a banner with one solution, "Break Up the Big Banks". On April 29 approximately 10,000 demonstrators flooded Wall Street with similar demands; a series of rallies and teach-ins on financial reform will be held in DC May 15 through 17.
