San Francisco | Health, Housing, and Public ServicesSingle Payer Health Care Forum - Congressman Eric Massa
Single Payer Now held an annual potluck and forum at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco on Saturday, December 19. Hear audio as upstate New York Congressman Eric Massa speaks on the need for a national Single Payer Health Care system in the United States and his efforts to bring it about. Massa is a Republican turned Democrat who ran and won in a moderate Republican district on a Single Payer Health Care platform. Single Payer Now organizer Don Bechler speaks about local efforts during the past year and in the near future. (33 minutes)
Congressman Massa spoke with fiery rhetoric about his efforts and the absolute need for Single Payer Health Care without insurance companies. He is an expert on the subject, describing the virtues of Single Payer along with the problems of the current Senate bill in extensive detail.
He is facing a tough re-election campaign. He has been targeted by Republicans for his health care stances. He is unlikely to get much Democratic Party support because of his opposition of its current health care financing reform plan, reportedly in the face of aggressive pressure from the White House. But he makes it perfectly clear - to a large and really enthusiastic audience - that he will not stop or slow down his efforts for what is right. Single Payer Now has increased its membership from 6,000 to 13,000 people this year. The group will be organizing for a day of action in Sacramento for State Single Payer bill SB 810, the California Universal Healthcare Act, on January 11.
