Santa Cruz Indymedia | U.S. | Education & Student ActivismTeachers 4 Class War 11.16.09: Rick Posner's School of Hope
Last Monday we talked with Rick Posner, the author of "Lives of Passion, School of Hope" about Jefferson County Open School, a public school in Colorado that seems to do things a bit differently, and his book explores how its alumni look back on their experiences attending the remarkable high school and what they are doing with their education. 59:42 mono MP3.
"How one public school ignites a lifelong love of learning" is a serious subheadline--l@s maestr@s were intrigued. While critical of the model that can, at times, engender entitlement rather than critical thinking, self-worth rather than self-reflection, we were impressed with the Open School's commitment to doing things differently, getting kids out of the classroom and into the world. The book does an amazing job of tracking down the students who've benefited from the programs, and Rick does an amazing job of discussing the ideas behind and evolution of a different kind of public high school.
