Oscar Grant Case: Trial of Mehserle to be held in Los Angeles
Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle's trial for the murder of Oscar Grant is headed to Los Angeles.
Last month a judge ruled that the accused former police officer would not be able to get a fair trial in Alameda county. Indybay.org and community activism were cited as part of the reason.
While the best outcome would have been to try the case in the Bay Area, Oscar Grant supporters consider the move to LA better than to San Diego (the other location that was under consideration).
"The sense is at least in LA county the case is presented to a diverse jury you have more of a likelihood of getting a verdict that's consistent with the facts," Grant family lawyer John Burris said. He was quoted in several corporate media outlets.
Also reported in corporate media sources: Alameda County prosecutors said there is a better chance of having more African Americans sit on a jury in Los Angeles. That county that looks more like Alameda County in terms of demographics, than San Diego.
