In celebration of Veterans’ DayVeterans, Widows, Activists Demands Speedy Processing of Claims, Full Recognition for Veterans and Full Benefits to Widows

SAN FRANCISCO- Members of the Justice for Filipino-American Veterans (JFAV) and Association of Widows, Advocates and Relatives for Equality (AWARE), students and community supporters will kick-off a week of action to celebrate Veterans’ Day by launching the book, “Unrecognized American Veterans—History, Memory and Equity for Filipino WWII Veterans” written by Arturo Garcia and edited by Peter Cuasay, Ph.D..

Garcia will discuss updates on the slow processing of the lump sum by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), the continuing struggle of veterans for full recognition and the right of widows for full benefit.

He is scheduled to talk with members of the SF Lion’s Club on Nov. 9, 7:30 pm at the Marie Callender at the Serramonte Mall in Daly City.

With veterans and widows on Nov. 10, 9:00 a.m. at the Woolf House in Downtown San Francisco

and on the same day with students and teachers at the Health Center, Rm. 213, 12:00 p.m. at the City College of San Francisco (CCSF).

The “Unrecognized Veterans” will be the first book that talks about the history of the equity movement and struggle for full recognition of Filipino World War II Veterans, and how many felt betrayed by the grant of $15,000 lump sum instead of a lifetime pension benefit last February, 2009. Equity supporters also hope to revive the foiled initiative to include in the curriculum of schools in California the subject of Filipino WWII Veterans.

Different activities will mark the celebration in LA with participation from broad community and school organizations:

Nov. 11, Veterans Day Protest from FACLA to Downtown LA, program at 8:30-9:30 a.m., march at 10:00 a.m., rally at 11 a.m.;

Samahang Pilipino of UCLA Appreciation Dinner for the Veterans, 6:00-9:00 p.m., FACLA Social Hall at 1740 W Temple St., LA and

Nov. 14 Historic Filipinotown Health Fair with free health screenings, sponsored by Search to Involve Filipino-Americans (SIPA), 7 am- 5 pm at the 3200 W Temple St., LA.
