Join us to tell UC Berkeley to Dump their Dow!

Join us to confront Dow Chemical on Monday November 9th at UC Berkeley at 12:00pm. The Haas School’s Center for Responsible Business will be hosting a talk by Carol Dudley, Senior Vice President of the Dow Chemical Company called "From Suds to Speedways How 'Green' Ideas can Flow from Unexpected Taps."

On December 3rd, it will be twenty-five years since the night that Union Carbide (now owned by Dow Chemical) unleashed a cloud of poisonous gas that killed more than 20,000 people in Bhopal, India, the worst toxic disaster in history. Today, contamination from pesticides and heavy metals continues to damage the health of hundreds of thousands in Bhopal--and Dow Chemical Company refuses to clean up the poisoned water, soil, and abandoned factory site.

Can we let Dow get away with greenwashing like this in our backyard? UC Berkeley receives $10 million of Dow funding for sustainable chemistry initiatives, and we've been telling them to dump their Dow funding for years! This is an opportunity to confront Dow and UC Berkeley at the same time. We will be exhibiting photos from Bhopal at the event, lining the corridors to the room before the talk to display the destructive human impact Dow has had on the world. We will attend the talk with photos in hand and questions in mind.

This is not “sustainable” chemistry or “responsible” business!

We plan to meet at 11.45am at the main entrance of the Cheit building to prepare the exhibit. The talk will be from 12.30pm - 2pm and takes place in Cheit C125. We'll line the hallway to the event from 12-12:30 and then join the event. We need as much support as we can get to make an impact and we would love to be able to document it to put pictures up on the Students for Bhopal website. The more the merrier (and messier for Dow) so please come along and make that difference!

Contact Esther at esther [at] panna.org or Shana at shana [at] panna.org if you have any further questions about this event. We will happily answer any queries and welcome all support in the fight for justice in Bhopal!! Let us know if you can come on the 9th, so we know how many people to plan for.

Thank you and keep up the good work. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the afternoon of Monday the 9th. Ready to make a difference??
