East Bay | Anti-WarUpdate and thank you from Stephanie Tang
Hi! WE NOW HAVE A NEW TRIAL ANTICIPATED DATE...in October 2009 (!) . At yesterday's readiness hearing, the judge (not Greenberg, a different one this time) granted a continuance motion from my attorney Walter Riley. Because the DA is still NOT dropping this case -- which by ordinary criteria should've happened -- we will be pursuing more discovery motions before trial. Speaking to Walter (but in the open courtroom, so we heard him) this judge commented about not knowing why this case (a single misdemeanor, over a year old) is still going. He said perhaps this had to do with politics and the DA's office....altho, he said, of course he himself had no opinion about that (!?!?!)...
We had ten supporters with me in the courtroom. Every time we're there it makes such a difference to have such a sign of the unity the court will be up against if they actually put me on trial. Certainly the judge took notice -- we are an unusual looking group: on the surface you might wonder what such different "types" are doing together, except somehow they're all wearing orange ribbons, shirts, bandanas, and some in pink as well. THANKS to all who trekked to the Oakland Courthouse at 8:30 AM once again to be there with me, and I say this not just for myself, but for World Can't Wait and everyone else who puts up determined protest and serious resistance to the machinery of war and occupation, especially over the recruiters**. (** See http://www.worldcantwait.org for new reports on WE ARE NOT YOUR SOLDIERS campaign in the high schools and at music festivals, and our upcoming protest this month over the NAACP bringing the "Army Strong" recruiters into their national convention in New York...) My next readiness hearing is Friday October 9, at 9 AM again. Please come, and bring your friends. I'm attaching the latest version of the flyer giving the basic story of my case. We anticipate that at this readiness hearing, the trial date will be set for the following week. Again, this will be a full 12-person jury trial, with the prosecution case going first and then our defense - total running time maybe 3-5 days. We plan to present a full-tilt anti-war trial, and hope you can be there. Yours with indefatigable impatience for a different world..... Stephanie |
