*** PROTEST SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 16, 2009 AT 3:30 PM OUTSIDE KTVU'S HEADQUARTERS ***

In what can only be described as a pure power grab, $15 billion conglomerate Cox, owner of KTVU Channel 2 & KICU Channel 36, is trying to add to the two stations they already own in the Bay Area.

If successful, the move would effectively shut down the efforts of multiple minority-led organizations launching free television programming to gravely underserved markets.

KTVU claims in a recent filing to the FCC they will lose part of the coverage they currently enjoy on Channel 2 after they switch to digital TV this Friday. They have asked the FCC to give them Channel 42 as compensation for their alleged loss of coverage.

Yet they already own a higher powered station – KICU-TV in San José – that could do the job much better on one of its multiple program streams.

Instead, by grabbing for Channel 42, KTVU will stifle a coalition of community broadcasters organized by KAXT, a locally owned, minority-led television station ready to launch 22 free over-the-air channels on June 12th.

If KTVU is allowed to take away the channel first filed for by KAXT with the FCC in 2007, it would set a dangerous national precedent for all independent media outlets.

A protest outside of KTVU's headquarters at 2 Jack London Square in Oakland, CA is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 at 3:30 pm. All of the displaced groups will have strong representation.

Below is a comprehensive slate of the programming set to air on KAXT, featuring the first free-to-air South Asian television channel in the country, the first 24/7 Vietnamese channel in the region, two local Spanish channels, a channel targeting the African-American community, not to mention Filipino content.
