Condi Rice Caught on Tape on Stanford Campus Lying About Torture

by R.G. Dechane
Can Stanford in good conscience have former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice lecture on campus without acknowledging crimes against humanity under the Bush administration? While university officials are silent on the topic, students are speaking out. One student assailed Rice at a small campus event for "select" students on Monday, April 27th. A videotape of their conversation caught Rice in a big lie.

While Condoleezza Rice attended a dinner with 20 select students on campus, others held a human rights dinner on the lawn outside to demonstrate that the Stanford community will not ignore evidence that she violated international and domestic laws against aggressive war and torture. The students outside said they feel strongly about confronting Stanford’s institutional role in enabling
and even honoring this behavior.

Meanwhile inside the hall, one student managed to corner the former secretary of state and pressed her about the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Someone standing nearby caught the conversation on video and posted it on YouTube.

"If you were there in a position of authority and watched Americans jump out of 80 story buildings because these murderous tyrants went after innocent people, then you were determined to do anything that you could, that was legal, to prevent that from happening," Rice says on the tape.

At about 3:30 in the video, Rice's people try to have her end the conversation, but she appears to lose her cool and starts wagging her finger at the student as she keeps talking. At one point she addresses the student as "dear" in a condescending manner.

The big lie? When the student asks if waterboarding is torture, Rice answers, "If it was authorized by the president it did not violate our obligation under the conventions against torture." And then the real whopper: "I did not authorize anything."

Senate documents recently revealed show that Rice DID authorize the CIA to use waterboarding.
