Meet in the Middle 4 Equality Is Theme of LGBT Rally to Be Held in Fresno
A rally for national LGBT equality was held on Saturday, May 30 — the first Saturday after the California Supreme Court issued its ruling on Proposition 8. The campaign was designated as "Meet in the Middle for Equality" and began with a symbolic march from Selma, CA to the steps of City Hall in downtown Fresno.
Lesbian mother Robin McGehee, who was forced out of her position as a PTA president after Proposition 8 passed in California, is a Fresno activist and lead organizer for the event. With the endorsement of leading gay rights activists including Cleve Jones, and supported by more than 50 organizations representing faith, labor and progressive movements, the rally is expected to bring out thousands of LGBT equality supporters from across the state with participants coming from other states as well. The emphasis will be on federal rights for the LGBT community and the rally will be held no matter what the decision made by the California Supreme Court on Proposition 8.
Organizers say the struggle for full equality has to be won in towns like Fresno, and not just in LGBT-friendly metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles. They feel that California's Central Valley population is more representative of "middle-America" attitudes that "ballot-bash" against LGBT and other equality issues.
