Belgium arrests anti-Nato activists
Belgian police have detained about 400 peace activists who tried to get into Nato headquarters to protest the alliance's 60th anniversary.
The protest on Saturday was organised by the group Vredesactie, translated as action for peace.
Most of the demonstrators were picked up by horse-mounted police officers close to the Nato building.
Other groups of demonstrators were also deployed at different areas around the huge complex.
'End Nato' calls
Hundreds of people responded to the group's call to stage protests demanding the abolition of Nato, which is holding a summit on April 3 in Strasbourg, France, and in Kehl, Germany, to mark the anniversary.
Roel Stynen, a spokesman for the protesters, says Nato is "causing more problems than it solves".
The activists say the 26-nation alliance is not helping to bring peace around the world because some of its members still keep stockpiles of nuclear missiles and they are fighting a loosing war in Afghanistan.
They also demanded that troops from the Western military alliance be pulled out of Afghanistan and that hundreds of American nuclear weapons at air bases in Europe, including in Belgium, be relocated to the US.
