Rally and March for Justice for Oscar Grant, Oakland, 1/14/09: photos

by dave id
At Oakland City Hall, the Coalition Against Police Execution organized another Wednesday Rally for Justice for Oscar Grant. This time Oscar Grant's murderer, BART police officer Johannes Mehserle, is in custody after having been arrested for murder yesterday. Also, organizers made plans for a march this time; last week, the march to downtown from Fruitvale BART was relatively impromptu. Today's march proceeded down 14th Street to Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff's office, where several speakers rallied the crowd, and then back to Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of City Hall. The police presence was very heavy, many with cameras and already in riot gear, and dozens of citizens volunteered to corral demonstrators in order to prevent further social unrest like last Wednesday's.

Despite the unusually strong video evidence, it took the DA 13 days to bring charges against Mehserle in a case so clear cut that anyone but a police officer would have been arrested the very day of the murder.

Oakland merchants are sponsoring a Celebrate 17th on 17th Street, to bring merchants and residents together to aid the small minority and women-owned business district impacted by the aftermath of the killing of young Oscar Grant. The street will be closed 2 to 5 on Saturday and we are inviting musicians and community groups to stroll and table. (http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/01/14/18562918.php)
