Wednesday November 19 at 10:00 a.m. San Francisco City Hall Beginning of ongoing protest We demand a specific date for the issuance of Municipal IDs! We are hereby calling on all of the organizations that have taken part in one way or another in the Cities for All movement (whose main goal has been the implementation of Municipal IDs) to take part in the press conference and ongoing protest which will begin on November 19 at San Francisco City Hall. Our protest will call on San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to set a specific date to begin issuing Municipal IDs. Background: More than a year ago a majority of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the implementation of Municipal IDs, which was supposed to take place nine months later, in August, but which for various reasons did not occur and was postponed until October. As a result of the San Francisco Chronicle's recent anti-immigrant campaign, and before the state and Federal elections, the Mayor decided to place the program on hold pending a planned revision of the legislation to avoid conflicts with Federal law. The Supervisors had to make changes and vote on the implementation of the program again. The last news we've heard is that the program should begin in three months, but because the repeated delays have created distrust in the community, and because of the tremendous effort that many organizations, community members, and elected officials have put into this project, WE DEMAND THAT THE MAYOR PUBLICLY COMMIT HIMSELF TO A SPECIFIC DATE TO BEGIN THE MUNICIPAL ID PROGRAM! This Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., we will begin an ongoing protest outside of San Francisco City Hall until Mayor Gavin Newsom comes out and tells us in person what day the issuance of San Francisco Municipal IDs will begin.
