Corporate America At The Tree Sit (one short primer with contact info)

by Nathan Pitts
The Oak Grove Tree Sit, an example of the alternative living skills needed for the changing economy and ecology, is not itself outside of the American-style capitalism economic sphere. This is a short look at some of the corporations and businesses that make money off the protest.

The Oak Grove Tree Sit, an example of the alternative living skills needed for the changing economy and ecology, is not itself outside of the sphere of American-style capitalism. This is a short look at some of the corporations and businesses that make money off the protest. In this primer, there are 2 sections, the first being those who maintain the infrastructure of the cage and the second being those in the media who profit on the "sensationalism" of the news story.

I listed the 2 media outlets because I was interested at the openness in their own feelings towards the story, and it was obvious in looking at completed product that their own biases tainted their reporting. I was also interested in how much more likely it was to be interviewed if one was a student (although never did reporters ask to see student i.d.) as opposed to being of a different social ranking. By focusing on the "upper-middle class" point of view, the story as portrayed by media outlets veered to certain slants. Plus the false notion carried by certain people in the news media that non-students, especially non-students without jobs, without steady housing, would have less intelligent things to say, was notable. The media also dealt heavily in obfuscation of facts - are there any student supporters, etc.

They provide the generator lights used as a sleep deterant, and psychological weapon both through intense light and intense sound. Recently, lights were added to the sidewalk as a deterant for media, cop-watch, and ground crew. The UC forces its own police to stand next to the machines which produce enough decibels to damage hearing.

The is the company that provides petrol for the generator lights. The diesel from the totality of all the lights running is altering the air quality in the immediate area, akin to having a fleet of parked trucks just idle and spew out fumes. The cops, having to stand next to the machines, are more at risk of any problems occurring from the diesel.

The fence company - both fences, with barbed-wire. The fences themselves started the escalation by the cops on protesters. The fences altered the psychological landscape, making the grove a prison, and giving menial beat cops the prison guard mentality. The levels of assaults on protesters and false arrests escalated because of the alteration of the landscape's aesthetic. There cannot be a rational conclusion to the Tree Sit if the school continues to use the prison constructed by Tri-City Fence.
