Dykes Rally and March in Santa Cruz without Sponsors or Permits

by ~Bradley (bradley [at] riseup.net)
The 16th annual Santa Cruz Dyke March took place on May 31st to increase lesbian visibility and activism. The gathering, unsponsored and unpermitted, began at the clock tower and featured local poets and musicians. After a three and a half hour rally, queers from near and far, and allies, marched down Front St. to Laurel St. and then up Pacific Ave. while spectators lined the sidewalks.

Chants during the march included:

We're Here! We're Queer! We're Not Going Shopping!!

(To the Barney tune)
I love you, you love me, homo-sex-u-a-lity.

2, 4, 6, 8... How do you know your wife is straight?

Poverty, greed, discrimination! Fuck your kinder, gentler nation!

2, 4, 6, 8... we will not assimilate!

nice pics, and relay of the story... um, this is my comment:

The chant. "We're Here! We're Queer! We're Not Going Shopping!!" does not really make much sense. "We're Here! We're Queer! We're Not Going MARRIED!!" seems to be a bit more fitting...

FYI, the chant I've heard, and that DOES make sense to me, is when economically challenged folks rally and march with the slogan, "We're Here! We're POOR! We're Not Going Shopping!!"

Dyke march looks like great fun, otherwise.

should say "... Getting MARRIED!!"

I am pretty sure that chant stated "we're not going shopping" because that festivity was not sponsored or "permitted", it was just people having fun and celebrating life without spending money.

Great Job on the photos Bradley! As usual!

I think they chant "they are not going shopping" because they are recognizing the plight of poverty and consumerism that effects everyone, straight , gay or otherwise. They were saying in essence "were here to march, not to shop!" as they are garning the attention of... shoppers. I think its great the marchers recognize the effect of consumerism on society.

Although I liked the marriage chant too, the fixed version.

Peace
Tim

oh, yeah, good point Tim, and Sam... you know, sometimes the fingers type, faster than the brain thinks... That comment was my initial reaction, but upon further reflection, kind of realized, what you have both pointed out... Go Dyke Marchers!
