On Tuesday, April 22nd, UCSC students will rally and march to the UCSC career fair to protest the presence of military recruiters. Students at UCSC refuse to let our University serve as a vehicle to perpetuate the war and homophobic, sexist, racist and imperialist ideologies. A direct action will follow at the career fair.

Following is the official Students Against War press release:
Santa Cruz, CA, April 22nd 2008: As students of UCSC, we oppose the presence of military recruiters on campus. As an employer that uses predatory and discriminatory practices in recruitment, recruiters directly represent the homophobic, sexist and racist ideologies that have no place in this University. Furthermore, the military’s inhumane treatment of soldiers during and after tours of duty – through, for example, the neglect of the psychological and medical consequences of war – demonstrates that they view troops not as employees, but as property to be used and then discarded. Recruiters offer false promises of education and opportunity in order to manipulate people in to signing away the fundamental rights to which we are all entitled. We will not let our University be a vehicle for a system based on hateful ideologies and manipulation. We will not let our University be a vehicle to perpetuate the unjust war in Iraq.

It is for these reasons that on Tuesday, April 22 of 2008, UCSC Students Against War will have a counter-recruitment action against the presence of military recruiters on our campus, asking them to leave our campus and never come back. Students of the University of California, Santa Cruz, will have a rally that begins in the Baytree Bookstore Plaza and proceeds to march to the career fair in the College 9/10 multipurpose room, followed by a direct action. Twice in the past, UCSC students have successfully prevented military recruitment and kicked military recruiters off of our campus. On Tuesday, UCSC students, along with supporting faculty, staff and community members, hope to keep UCSC recruitment-free once again.

The rules are the ones posted by the recruitment fair, not by the protestors. But they didn't make it clear in this post. Obviously, the career fair people don't want a bunch of freaks disrupting the fair.

As a disabled veteran I find your lack of understanding of the military and it's purpose rather humorous.

How many of you have actually done service?
Do you know what the real intent of purpose of the military is?
And do you understand that it's not the military that causes war, but the governments that control the military?

I have done my service and my career was cut short by injuries, and I would do it all over again if I could. The only regrets I have are not being able to finish my 20 years and losing contact information of several people I met around the world during my service.

I do not like or want a war any more than any other American, but the reality is without a military in place the freedoms you have... such as the ability to assemble and protest the very people that defend your right to do so, would go away.

The problem is not with the military but the lack of American citizenry demanding the proper use of it's military. It's the lack of citizens using their power to make the government, which according to the proclamation, is of the people, by the people, for the people. It's that lackluster representation by the people that have allowed the misuse of the military and other resources this nation has at it's disposal.

Like many other protests, I see this one, while it's your right and I have fought and defended that right for you... since you decided that you couldn't earn it but would rather someone else do it for you, to protest something you do not understand or have the life experience to comprehend. You're going after the wrong entities... as usual.

Personally, let the military on campus. It's the right of every American to make their own decisions. What you are doing in essence is destroying the democratic process and enforcing your values on people. The ability to have free choice and to have access to various options is what makes a democracy work. You are destroying that which you need to continue to be able to enjoy your quality of life, by going after the wrong entity and denying others the right to choose. That is called a dictatorship and the last time I checked the United States of America was Constitutional Republic with a strong Democratic process... something to think about before you force your values on the rest of us.

I thank you for both your years of service and your thoughtful post. And I entirely agree with you that the majority of people protesting are afforded that very luxury by the efforts of a military which they protest with a very broad brush stroke that doesn't include nuance or the acknowledgment that it's a necessity to have one. Today I went and watched the protestor's at college 9 and 10. And after listening to their rhetoric it became abundantly clear to me I was right in my initial assumption, these people don't really see the big picture and are going after the wrong entity as I had suspected.


While I was standing there at a respectful distance so as not to cause a problem, a man approached with his young daughter (she was on his back) and he asked me some questions about what I was seeing and what I thought. And I answered him honestly and as non-confrontational as I could. Essentially I said that the war in Iraq is not the military's fault, but the fault of the American people. How is it our fault? Simple, we failed to use the power of the people to coerce and control the government to our will. That is how a Constitutional Republic works. It's a government of the people, by the people, for the people. He countered with a very true statement, âBut our vote doesn't count, the government is controlled by corporations.â and he is right, which means by definition, that we are no longer a Constitutional Republic with a strong Democratic process but a Fascist regime with weak Democratic process, heading towards dictatorship if we don't act soon.


My response to his astute observation was very simple, we the people still failed to vote with our money. We allowed it all to happen. We the people allowed the corporations to take our power from us and install their own puppets in office. Just like this upcoming election will end with a new puppet, and they already know who is going to replace Bush. That was resolved a long time ago. Ron Paul was the only real politician worth a damn... but he isn't on the corporations pay-roll so he will never win, at least not with the electoral college system. But back to my original discourse, we the people as a nation have failed and allowed the destruction of the core of our government. It was very easy to do really, by playing on peoples insecurities with ads to prime then then the âtoysâ to appease then, the major corporations slowly weaseled their way into the government with special interest lobbyists and âcampaign donationsâ. And the American people looked the other way, stopped voting, stopped boycotting... why should they care? After all they have their âtoysâ!


All we have to do is look in the mirror people and see that the person staring back at you is responsible for the war in Iraq, the declining economy and high fuel prices as well as environmental issues that are destroying our way of life. That's right, you and you and you too in the back there... yes, your lack of action with your vote and your dollar as allowed all these things to come to pass. By allowing you insecurities to be fed upon by skillful advertisement, you opened the door to being manipulated. By succumbing to the lies of feeling good and being cool if you buy this, you became addicted to then blinded by excessive consumerism. Consume, consume and consume more. And all the while the mega corporations were buying laws to protect themselves. From there it's a simple matter of buying the right politicians to do their bidding. Eventually they were able to buy a president... and you just let it happen. Without even a whisper of dissent...


There was a small handful of us that saw it before it even started and we were called communist or socialist or some other ist, and un-patriotic! We were put down as loonies that wanted to remove the government and install a socialist regime. But the truth is we few saw the vileness of the corporations before they infected the government and then the people themselves. No, protesting the military is not effective. It does nothing but divide the nation even more. Whom you SHOULD be protesting with your money and your vote are the corporations and the government. After all they are the driving forces behind our illegal war in Iraq. It's profit at all costs and even your life is forfeit if they can made a buck off of it. You see, in the original Constitution, the founding fathers had limited the power of corporations intentionally. Because they had been abused before and they KNEW it would happen again. They also mandated a separation of church and state, again because they saw the corruption of religion in politics. That is not to say you cannot have your religion and worship it, far from that! The Constitution grants you that right! And the military protects that right. Looking at the regime in office now... we are in a corporate holy war.


But enough on that for now. I find it amazing how many people really don't understand what the Constitution is and what it means to this nation. While I am not a complete expert in the Constitution, I do understand it's intent, I understand why it is important and I understand that without it we lose our status as Americans and become just another footnote in the history of Republics. I learned the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation and the Bill of Rights because I took an oath to support and defend these documents. And if I was going to put my life on the line, I wanted to know why. It was also important because I KNEW that if I didn't KNOW what they were then how would I know if my rights had been violated? Below is the oath every enlisted person takes. Read it, learn it and you will then see why the protest against the military is so off target.


I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.


This is the oath of enlistment I swore to, sans god. And in that oath there is nothing about invading foreign nations or supporting a corporate war machines. And this is why WE THE PEOPLE have failed. The protest against the military at UC Santa Cruz is completely out of context of the real issues at hand. The real issues are the corporations and their power they wield over our lives and our government.


So when you are done looking in the mirror, take a look around your house at all the things, THINGS, you have in it and ask yourself âWhy did I support the corporate war machine with my money?â Because those things represent your support for the war in Iraq, the suspension of Habeas Corpus, warrant-less taps, sneak and peek search and seizure, the real ID... and the list goes on.


Your âneedâ to surround yourself with material things and to drive a big inefficient vehicles and to leave lights on when you leave a room... these all fueled the issues at hand. The men and women in the military are insulated against seeing what is happening. I know, I was there for 14 years. We swore and oath and carried out our duties. We don't have the luxury question, we count on you to watch our backs here at home. And you failed so now my brothers and sisters in arms are dying and killing for corporate greed and profit and you sit here protesting these brave men and women?


Like I said in my previous post, when you deny people the right to make decisions and you deny them access to all possible avenues then you are no better or different than any other dictatorship in the world. My intent is to get you to think and to look past the immediate anger you have and redirect it at the corporations and government that is truly responsible for our predicament. The Declaration of Independence contains the clearest text that the people that have the right and the obligation to remove the government if it fails to adhere to the law of the Constitution. That is our obligation as American citizens and we have failed to do so on so many levels. And this failure on our part is the reason we have lost our nation. Take a long hard look in the mirror... the source of the failure is staring back at you.
