DQ-U RAIDED! 17 Arrested! Solidarity Needed Now with Indigenous University!

by @
DQ-University has been raided by law enforcement officers this morning! Please show solidarity in whatever way possible!

On Sunday, many people stood their ground at Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl, also known as DQ-University, against a raid by police forces on the indigenous university. For decades, the school has been a forum and place for native people to learn about their cultures, educate each other, and experience a closeness to the earth. The school was formed in the 1970's, when indigenous people stormed an old army base and eventually forced the government to turn it over to Native hands. DQ-U was born in struggle and in struggle it stays today!

But, due to conflicts with the Board of Trustees who wants to see the students who have continued to occupy the school gone, police have continuously been called out to remove the students from their own land.

Today, at around 9:40 AM, sherrifs, CHP officers, and unmarked cars (supporters of DQ-U students counted about 15) arrived to remove the few remaining students and also change the locks on the buildings. Police managed to arrest 17 people, although many supporters are still at the site (at the time of the arrest). Solidarity is urgently needed to get the police and the Board of Trustees off the students backs!

People from the Indigenous Nations Network have asked people to call the sherrif and judge in protest of the raid at:

"Yolo County Sheriff

The Pow Wow planned for Sunday April 6, 2008, dedicated to the TLAKAXIPIUALIZTLI, the 2nd 20 day period in the ancient Indigenous calendar (mka Aztek Calendar) will be the best opportunity to show support for California´s only Indigenous college.

The Pow Wow is scheduled to begin at 12 noon, however, there is a Community meeting gathering at 10 am on Sunday at which there will be nominations and selection of new board members to replace this outlaw board that has run amok.

This is a call to all Drums and All Danzantes to come together or send a contingency to represent you at this Gathering of Nations at D. Q. to plan the Planting of the Corn, our future. All attention must be focused on this urgent need and the safety and recuperation of freedom for those that have been arrested representing all indigenous peoples in their plight of persecution and unlawful detention.

This is a call to all D. Q. Alumni and supporters for the past 30 years to recall the vision with which this university was founded and begin the rebuilding of that dream.

Let us put aside our personal diferences and come together on this common cause...Liberation Education

we are also calling for letters of support, in particular for the students there, if you know or knew any of the students you could write a letter of support for that individual or for all together.

Thank you for the update. D-Q U deserves attention and research by educational communities in favour of academic freedom, particuarly progressive and radical communities. This should be of interest to people who are concerned about the increasing police state atmosphere of U.S. life. The scant, lackluster social reforms of the twentieth century are being rolled back. Solidarity is crucial.

Research and intellectual diligence and questioning is equally crucial. I humbly call on others to add comments of information on or analysis of the DQ-U struggle for academic and social justice, human rights.

In solidarity for peace, democracy and social & economic justice,

Felipe Messina, KPFA listener-member, volunteer
94.1 FM, Berkeley, Aztlan

postscript:
Please consider H.R. 1955 and its Senate counterpart as we strive to protect civil and human rights from state repression.

Don't include the camera icon in the post title if there aren't any actual pics of the event, mmmkay? I was hoping to see some nice-looking police officers...
