At 11am Monday, U.C. Berkeley students lay down in Sproul Plaza to protest the ongoing massacre in Gaza that is being carried out with US supplied weapons. 2 Israeli soldiers and over 70 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed Saturday March 1st in an Israeli operation in Northern Gaza. Organized by Students For Justice in Palestine, students handed out flyers to raise awareness to the plight of Palestians living under Israeli occupation.

Most of those who died were killed in a massive assault on Jabaliya. Despite calling an end to the operation on Monday, Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, said Israel would be taking further action in Gaza unless cross-border rocket fire was cut significantly.

"We are not willing to show tolerance, period. We will respond," Olmert said.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports that Gazans were "very anxious indeed. They are hearing the talk in Israel about this being merely the first stage of the operation and they are wondering: if this was the first stage, what on earth can they be likely to face during any second phase."

Electronic Intifada reports: The larger hospitals in Gaza are fully occupied. Since Friday 29 February 2008, surgery has been performed 24 hours a day in all 12 operating theaters of Shifa Hospital. Medical teams at this hospital are working in emergency mode since four days ago. Medical supplies and other equipment are dwindling, and there is a shortage in beds, needles, wound dressings, anesthetics and heavy medical equipment such as CPR machines.
