Santa Cruz Indymedia | Arts + Action | Health, Housing, and Public Services | Police State and PrisonsFarmer's Market Drum Report Back
Report of ongoing campaign by Santa Cruz police to silence the Farmer's Market Drum Circle, a decade-old tradition. The people were victorious again.
The drummers vigorously defended themselves and the community rallied to support them. The crowd was larger than I'd seen it in a while. The drummers and Food Not Bombs came early. A notable chef served amazing soup. The drums continued into the evening. People came and went, met friends, chatted. Cruisers drove through the lot at least once, but didn't stop. An officer attempted to videotape the drum circle from the stairway of the University Center. A citizen with a large Don't Tread On Me revolutionary war militia flag on a long pole stood in front of the window and blocked the officer's camera until he left, waving at the crowd that had gathered calling him out. Funny. The comedy down there just keeps escalating. Cops versus community. Overall, two thumbs up.
