HUNDREDS OF WATSONVILLE RESIDENTS TO MARCH FOR
PEACE AND UNITY AT 14TH ANNUAL EVENT!

Residents Say Remaining Proactive Against Violence Has Made Big Difference!
Event will honor over 71 local residents who lost their lives to domestic and street violence.

On Sunday, November 4, 2007, hundreds of local residents will be joining the 14TH ANNUAL WATSONVILLE PEACE & UNITY MARCH which will take place at 11am at the Watsonville Plaza. The Peace ceremony begins at 11. We march at Noon SHARP. Several community leaders, family members of victims of violence and youth will be addressing the effects of violence on our communities.

“This march is an ongoing effort to stop the destruction of our youth and community by violence,” said Sandino Gomez, an organizer of the Watsonville Peace and Unity Coalition. “It creates a community consciousness about becoming actively involved in reducing violence and improving our neighborhoods for our future generations.”

“Remaining proactive against violence has made a tremendous difference,” said Jenn Laskin, an event organizer. “After this march first began thirteen years ago, we have seen other efforts emerge throughout our city to bring peace and unity to all our homes, schools, and neighborhoods, and to keep violence at a minimum here in Watsonville.”

This yearly event continues to be organized by a coalition of concerned students, parents, community-based organizations, churches and families who have lost their loved ones to gang and domestic violence. The event does not allow us to forget the names of over 71 of our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives to violence since this event first began 14 years ago.

This grassroots event is sponsored by the Watsonville Peace and Unity Coalition, a coalition of students, parents, community-based organizations, churches, and family members who have lost their loved ones to violence. Endorsing organizations include the Watsonville YWCA, Watsonville Brown Berets, Watsonville High School, EA Hall Middle School, Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers, Lutheran Church of Watsonville, Resource Center for Nonviolence and more TBA.

We hope you can cover our 14-year anniversary of this very important event that is primarily organized by Watsonville Latino youth!

Comments (Hide Comments)
I've posted this comment to show that what is happening to our communities is happening all around the world. Last month, here in Nottingham (UK), over 300 people came together to voice their opposition against the city's gun crime and gang culture problems. The families of victims of violent crimes, such as the killing of the 15 year old Nathan Williams in the Meadows area of the city last year came together to call for 'Peace And Unity' and to put an 'End To The Killings'.
