Unpermitted March Through San Francisco's Financial District Says, "Globalize This!"
On Friday, October 19th, Globalize This!, students, and other protesters converged near Montgomery BART, in the heart of the financial district in downtown San Francisco to demonstrate against the policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Globalize This!, a new grassroots collective that works to promote awareness and take actions against neoliberal policies, sponsored the event in order to show solidarity with the "October Rebellion," which aimed to disrupt the IMF meeting in Washington DC.
The protesters met at Market and 2nd Streets at 4:00pm on October 19th. Many people arrived on bikes since a "critical mass" had been advertised on the flyers. Speeches were given, drums were played, and an unpermitted march through the financial district took place. "For a few hours people organized against capitalist hegemony while expressing a fervent message that would resound loudly." The action had been organized to protest the IMF's dehumanizing, undemocratic, and destructive policies. Speakers pronounced that the pro-corporate, neoliberal agenda of the IMF is not the only way.
The crowd took to the streets in an unpermitted march that made its way up Market Street, the main artery of San Francisco, and the heart of the Financial District. The march visited the Westgate Mall, and continued after it started to rain.
