Novelist and critic Jonathan Wilson clears away the sentimental mist surrounding the celebrated artist Marc Chagall in his new biography. More political than previous biographies, Wilson’s portrait of Chagall probes his ambivalence about his role as a Jewish artist and examines his secular outlook, as reflected in his portrayal of the tragic events of the Jewish past.
