Santa Cruz Indymedia | Immigrant RightsCommunity Vigil in Beach Flats to Support Elvira Arellano
On August 24th, dozens of community members gathered in Beach Flats Park for a vigil in solidarity with Elvira Arellano and all of the other families in risk of separation because of the US government's inhumane immigration laws and selective enforcement practices. The emergency rally and vigil was coordinated by M.E.Ch.A. de La Tierra with the support of a handful of local organizations. People spoke about the case of Elvira Arellano, who, with her son Saul, has become a national symbol of the destruction of families by federal policy. ![]() beachflats_8-24-07.jpg For more information about the Beach Flats vigil, see:

Some time (~1 month) ago, I saw a police officer stop four Latino youths on Laurel Street near the Louden Community Center. All four were sat on the sidewalk, and soon three other police cars pulled up. The youths were searched one by one by a young police officer wearing blue rubber gloves, and were forced to pull their shirts up over their heads as well. Another officer took photographs of each of the youths.
I watched all this from across the street, assuming it was some serious bust - but then the police officers released the youths! They walked quickly away, but I ran after them and asked what had happened. It turned out that they had all been stopped because they had been in the Laurel crosswalk when the light turned yellow! I was astonished and walked back - the police officer, a Latino gentleman with a small, neat mustache, said he couldn't make any comment and quickly got in his car and drove off. What is this? A Gestapo police state or what? |
