Update on Intervention and Occupation in East Africa

While pretending to be concerned about the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of the Sudan, the Bush Administration has just announced new sanctions which will inflict more suffering on the population. Many leading Democrats are criticizing Bush - for not making the sanctions harsh enough. And some “peace” groups are raising the pro-war slogan: “Out of Iraq - Into Darfur.”

At the same time, the Pentagon has sponsored the invasion and occupation of Somalia by its allies in the region like Ethiopia and Uganda. U.S. military forces have bombed and shelled Somalia in the name of the “war on terrorism,” causing additional suffering in one of the poorest countries on the planet.

What is Washington’s real aim in the region? How are the conflicts in East Africa connected to the war and occupation in Iraq?
