Announcing the Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy

by Rico
Sarah, who I met in Boston, an artist with old found stuff right up my alley, told me that if you don't document art, any newcomer in town is not going to know that Santa Cruz has a vibrant art community that exists largely outside of the gallery grind. Document, she said, and the artists in town, new and old, will have a sense of momentum -- a sense, that in spite of the lack of art galleries, art buyers, art patrons, art grants, art money, that this town has a lively habit of blurring the boundary between art and life.

Zumwalt-Bonfire-by-Infinite.jpgThe Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy is an attempt to share and document some of the creative efforts of artists in Santa Cruz, California working to blur the lines between art and life, and between the personal and the political.

The focus is on the cathartic process of creating art, collaboration and community, conceptional art and performance. Non-commercial, non-institutional, we are, at heart, believers in the importance of DIY (do-it-yourself).

Well beyond the oft-heard complaint about lack of gallery space, our streets, our neighborhoods, our public spaces should be places of art and performance.

The Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy website documents some of the non-institutional non-commerical art efforts in Santa Cruz. It is a historical record stretching as far into the past as we can remember and as far into the future as art still matters. Your contributions and suggestions are welcome. http://scartconspiracy.blogspot.com

Join the Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy email list (SCART), an email forum for announcing non-institutional art events, meetings and projects, ideas and news. It is a low-volume, moderated list sharing information about local Santa Cruz art topics only. Sign up for the SCART email list from the website.
