MICHAEL ERIC DYSON !!

Public lecture (*FREE*) followed by a generous Q&A

MONDAY, MARCH 5th, 6:30 p.m., OAKLAND

East Bay Church of Religious Science
4130 Telegraph Avenue
(near 40th St. & Telegraph Ave)

GET THERE **EARLY** TO FIND PARKING AND SEATING!!
(in addition to street parking, the church has a nearby parking lot
around the south corner, but get there early to find nearby spaces!)

Dyson is a very dynamic lecturer and to hear him at his *very best* you need to hear him at a Black venue, where his very lively lecture style is part professorial multisyllabic academese, layered with plenty of part rousing Black preacher style, and seasoned with part socioconscious hiphop verses. And Black folks don't sit with starched collars, straight up, on their hands, with their mouths quietly shut, in sterile silence, when they hear a Dyson lecture. No one is *ever* sorry that they attended a Dyson lecture. You *won't* fall asleep!

_DEBATING RACE_

Once again, the “hip-hop intellectual” champions issues plaguing the disenfranchised. With topics ranging from Civil Rights, the legacy of the O.J. Simpson trial, and the authenticity of Colin Powell, there is something in _Debating Race_ to touch a nerve in all of us.

Dyson - sometimes called the "hip-hop intellectual" - is no stranger to controversy over racial issues. Dyson's unique scholarship, which he terms "bio-criticism," fuses cultural and social criticism with biography that offers a different perspective to the rhetoric around race. Dyson has taken on everyone from Ann Coulter to Bill O'Reilly and Bill Cosby. Don't miss this opportunity to hear one of America's most innovative intellectuals.

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is the author of Come Hell or High Water, Is Bill Cosby Right?, The Michael Eric Dyson Reader, Open Mike; Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur; Why I Love Black Women; I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.; Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line; Between God and Gangsta Rap; Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X; and Reflecting Black.

Dyson is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Philadelphia.

And from the last time Dyson was lecturing in town back in 2005:

"When lower-class blacks took a hit from Bill Cosby, author Dyson came out swinging in their defense"
